WHITE ROCK (NEWS1130) – Late-night train whistles haven’t been heard along White Rock Beach for more than 20 years, but should that change?
Transport Canada has ordered a review of the whistling rules. This comes after a woman was killed while jogging along the tracks in July.
Transport Canada says the City of White Rock and the rail line would look at signage, fencing, and the use of whistles along Marine Drive, which are restricted between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The restriction was brought into effect early in the 1990s. A couple of years ago, a group of people living in White Rock lost a fight to get rid of train whistles completely.
The City will meet with the rail line next month.
Despite the whistling-restriction a train engineer can use it at any time of day, it they feel there is a threat to safety.
