Lions beat Roughriders on final play of game

REGINA, SK (NEWS1130) – BC kicker Paul McCallum booted a 42-yard field goal with no time left to lift the BC Lions to a 24-22 win over Saskatchewan. The Riders took the lead on a Weston Dressler TD with 38 seconds left.

With just under two minutes to go, it looked like the Lions defence had finished off the Riders when the home side fell short on a third-and-15 passing play. The Riders drive stayed alive because BC’s Chris Wilson took a roughing the passer penalty.

After the Dressler major, Marco Iannuzzi returned the kickoff to the Lions’ 44-yard line.

BC quarterback Thomas DeMarco then moved his team down the field in five plays to set up McCallum, the former Rider, for the winning field goal.

The first half was dominated by defence, as the Roughriders led 9-6.

After splitting time with Buck Pierce in the opening 30 minutes, DeMarco came alive in the third quarter.

The second year pivot threw touchdown passes of 43 and 20 yards to Nick Moore and Sean Gore respectively, which helped the Lions gain the advantage until the last minute Rider TD.

In his first ever CFL start, DeMarco was 18-of-33 for 208 yards and two touchdowns.

Dante Marsh had 13 tackles for the Leos’ defence.

Former Lions receiver Geroy Simon made five catches for 60 yards and tied Ben Cahoon atop the all-time receptions list in the CFL with 1,017.

BC visits Winnipeg on Friday.
