Municipal politicians endorse speed cameras in school zones

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – As students at Princess Margaret Secondary School in Surrey continue to mourn the death of the 16-year-old student who was killed when she was hit by a motorcycle Wednesday, a new idea is being floated to keep kids safe.

The pitch is to install speed cameras just in school zones and it’s been endorsed by municipal politicians from all over BC.

When Penticton Mayor Gary Litke first floated the idea he got a cool response from the BC government, which said it had no interest in going back to photo radar, even if it was just in school zones.

Litke tweaked the language and took it to the Union of BC Municipalities and won the support of delegates. He hopes that’s enough to get the province to reconsider. “I actually amended the motion to change the word photo radar to speed cameras, so I think that eased a lot of the anxiety around that.”

He started the push after an elementary school girl had her feet run over by a car in Penticton.
