Safety concerns top the list at Kinder Morgan open house

By

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Kinder Morgan held an open house at a Burnaby hotel Wednesday evening to speak with people about the proposed expansion of the Trans Mountain Pipeline and Burnaby oil tanker terminal.

The feeling wasn’t overwhelmingly negative as it sometimes can be at these kinds of events.

Most people came in with questions, mostly about safety, but keeping an open mind at the same time.

“I’m optimistic. Why would they not? I mean they’ve gone to the effort to reach out to folks and one assumes that folks have pure motives,” says one Port Moody Man.

Others felt much the same way, worried about the potential for disaster from a pipeline rupture or tanker spill, but at the same giving the company a chance to prove they’re listening.

People were worried about whether or not Kinder Morgan has enough insurance to cover any disaster.

They also want to make sure there is an adequate response plan in place in the event of a tanker spill on the coast.

Most came with an open mind but remained partly skeptical the company will follow through.

“I do believe that they will listen. They have a responsibility to do that. I do believe they will listen, it’s a matter of whether they will act on those things that they hear,” says one Port Coquitlam woman, who lives just doors from the existing pipeline.

Kinder Morgan representatives at the open house say they had received a lot of questions but hadn’t encountered a huge amount of negative comments from the public.
