Critics warn Burnaby vicious dog bylaw punishes wrong people

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Burnaby is taking a stand against vicious dogs, but defenders of pit bulls and other controversial breeds feel the move will only backfire.

They say increased fines will only punish responsible owners.

April Fahr with “Hug a Bull” feels problem owners will continue to fly under the radar.

“They don’t pay, they don’t pick their dogs back up when they end [up] at the impound, so all of these increased fines and barriers are actually going to mean more dogs at the shelter and more problem in the community.  It’s absolutely a deterrent to responsible ownership,” she says.

The legislation includes a $500 fine for a first offense.

She wonders why Burnaby has gone ahead with breed specific legislation, when other communities in the Lower Mainland have abandoned theirs.

“So it’s quite shocking that Burnaby would choose to obstinately go in the other direction and if I were a voter of Burnaby I would just, I would think about this next election year.”
