VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A new bike lane is being proposed to run through Kits Beach Park.
The separated bike lane would be part of the greenway that currently links Vanier Park with the western end of Kits Beach Park.
A staff report says because pedestrians and cyclists share that path, the situation can be dangerous and conflicts are frequent.
But at least one person on the Vancouver Park Board doesn’t believe enough of the neighbourhood has been consulted.
NPA Park Board Commissioner John Coupar feels the plans are being rammed through.
“This is something they are trying to fast-track. They are talking about completion by May 16, 2014. It will be voted on Monday night. I would say the work will begin very quickly and that concerns me because I don’t think people are aware of it,” he says.
He’s concerned about safety, with cyclists crossing a heavily-used pedestrian path.
“This bike lane is going to go across that very, very busy entrance to Kits Beach at Cornwall,” he notes
Park planners gathered input by surveying park users over three days. They want the project completed next spring.
