New strategy may impact thousands of Canadian military jobs

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – A major shake up announced today for the Canadian Armed Forces — nearly 5,000 jobs across the country could be affected.

The Harper government is looking for $1.2 billion in savings per year by 2018.

Minister of Defense Rob Nicholson says it’s not as bad as it sounds. “The intent here is not to reduce the number of regular force, reserve force, or civilian employees. It is expected, however, there will be a re-balancing of the workforce to address higher operational-driven priorities.”

Senior officials admit there may be a reduction. Many of these people will be asked to do other work, be retrained, or lose their jobs.

The department hopes to maximize the use of attrition.

Nicholson says these efficiencies are not cost-cutting measures because the savings will be pumped back into the department for front line operations and readiness. “Resources will be redirected towards the continued modernization of the Canadian Armed Forces.”
