Moving medical marijuana grow ops could lead to over growing

CHILLIWACK (NEWS1130) – A man who has been growing medicinal marijuana for a decade says he’s not happy with the City of Chilliwack’s new zoning bylaw which restricts grow ops to licenced industrial zones.

Sam Mellace has been growing for 10 years.

He fears, the move will mean a huge increase in the amount of pot being grown.

He says he also doesn’t want to move his operation because he isn’t near anything considered a public safety risk.

Mellace believes shifting grow ops to industrial land will produce more marijuana than needed by medicinal users.

“There’s only so much clientele and if you’ve got 100 companies with big buildings, they’re going to be producing way too much and they won’t be able to get rid of it and chances are, it will hit the street.”

He says he won’t comply with the new laws and will seek court action to be able to keep his plants in the ground.

It was this past August that Chilliwack voted to restrict medical marijuana grows to the industrial zones.

The change is meant to protect neighbours from bright lights, security risks and other problems that come along with grow ops.

“I am not going to move from where I am whether they order me or not. I will seek court action. I’ve got acreage. I’m not a public safety risk. I have no schools, no neighbours, nobody around me but the mountains,” says Mellace.
