Canoe of missing boater found near Point Roberts

BOUNDARY BAY (NEWS1130) – Rescue crews are no longer searching for a missing boater near Boundary Bay.

Cpt. Pat McSorley with the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre says the man’s canoe was found this afternoon near the southeast tip of Point Roberts, but there was no sign of him.

McSorley says survival is unlikely. “He departed Monday evening and wasn’t reported overdue until Tuesday evening. Even with the hypothermia models that we use we are well past any chance of survival just with a life jacket and regular clothes on.”

McSorley says Delta Police now have the file as a missing persons. “We found the vessel, it was submerged, just the front bow was sticking up out of the water. After this length of time there is no longer any hope of survival for someone who is in the ocean.”
