College calls for six months in jail for unlicenced dentist

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – A judge will decide the fate of an unlicensed Burnaby dentist next week, as questions continue about the whereabouts of Tung Sheng Wu.

He was once again a no-show in court today.

Despite his absence, the College of Dental Surgeons urged a judge to hand down a six-month jail sentence for contempt.

The College’s Jerome Marburg says the punishment is an important message to send. “Here’s somebody who has consistently thumbed his nose at the courts and at the College and has put hundreds of patients at risk.”

Fraser Health has been testing former patients over concerns they could have been exposed to HIV or Hepatitis B or C.

Marburg says they have no idea if Wu is still here, or if he’s left the country.

“We have got permission to speak to a Canada Revenue agent. There is significant amounts of money, I mean really significant amounts of money, that have been transferred offshore from this.”

A large quantity of dental supplies was found in a car seized in August, as it was about to be shipped to Toronto.

A Canada-wide warrant and a $2,000 reward have been issued. The judge will announce his decision next Tuesday morning.
