Many schools not allowing Halloween costumes

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Forget “Trick or treat!”

How about “Have a festive and inclusive, non-threatening, pagan-free, mid-autumn celebration of the only mildly paranormal!”

Little ghosts and ghouls are disappearing from our classrooms, as many schools stop letting kids celebrate Halloween in costumes.

The holiday is often being replaced by “Halloween Spirit Day” or “Orange and Black Festival” for various reasons, including worries about offending religious people and concerns that some kids’ families can’t afford costumes while others blow the budget on elaborate, expensive outfits.

But some critics of the movement are starting to fight back, suggesting schools are sucking the soul out of Halloween which, at its heart, has become a secular tradition in Canada that is really about having fun.

The anti-candy movement is also being targeted, with some people (especially kids) saying that handing out apples, sugar-free gum or even toothbrushes is an eggable offence on October 31st.
