A dangerous long weekend on BC roads

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There are a lot of people gearing up for Thanksgiving trips around the province this long weekend and it’s the first time this season that you are required to have snow tires or chains on many of our highways.

Historically, four people die and over 500 are injured in crashes over this long weekend.  ICBC’s Adam Grossman explains that’s because this is the most unpredictable travel time of the year.

“Especially as we said we’re going to be dealing with those varying whether conditions and road conditions across the province.  We could have some pretty sunny, dry conditions in the Lower Mainland but if we’re driving to other parts of BC then we are certainly going to see more challenging road conditions.”

He warns you need to be extra careful if you’re going over mountain passes like the Coquihalla Highway.

On average, there will be just over 1,700 crashes over the next four days.  Grossman says check your tire pressure before you go, and of course avoid distractions like your cellphone.
