BC’s tech industry growing, despite Pixar shutting down

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – In the same week that Vancouver’s Pixar Canada laid off dozens of workers, HootSuite started hiring 100 people.

In BC, tech is growing faster than our forestry, mining and energy industries.

Technology blogger Akash Sablok says even though some companies like Pixar have shut their doors, their influence will still being felt for years thanks to training. “We seem to have a really good supply of engineers that are lower priced than other places in Canada or the US. These are fantastically well-trained people that can provide great services for tech companies in Vancouver.”

He says we now have a reputation as Silicon North for a number of reasons. “We do have a climate for that, we have an atmosphere with a laid-back lifestyle in Vancouver, we have these wonderfully trained engineers and we have people that really like to push the boundary. I think people like HootSuite really like to have people like that.”

More than 80,000 people work at 8,900 tech companies in BC.
