Tips for staying safe in the kitchen this Thanksgiving

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As Fire Prevention Week comes to an end and you get ready for a big Thanksgiving meal, there are a few things you should keep in mind to make sure you have a safe holiday dinner.

“One of the most common causes of fires in kitchens is obviously people cooking with oil or grease,” explains Serge Corbet with the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

He says home fires account for about one-third of all fires.

So Corbet has a few reminders before you cook that turkey.

“My number one recommendation is never never leave anything cooking unattended, if you’re going to leave the room, turn off your stove.”

Corbet adds, if you have a grease fire, don’t bother with water. Instead, keep a cookie sheet handy to slide over the top of the pan to smother the fire. Before you roast that bird it’s also important make sure the oven is clean.
