VPD warning after violent sexual assault

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A warning is out from Vancouver police following a vicious sexual assault and beating early Sunday morning.

A 25-year-old woman from North Vancouver left a bar in Gastown around 2:00am and started looking for a way home.

She got into a van she thought was a taxi — but instead was taken somewhere in east Vancouver.

“The man inside the van severely beat and sexually assaulted her. The woman managed to escape eventually, get help from a passerby and call 911,” explains Constable Brian Montague. “This is a case of where an individual made that decision to make a random attack on a very vulnerable woman, she’s extremely traumatized, she’s obviously very upset.”

The victim has told police her attacker was an aboriginal man in his late 30s, with a shaved head and a large belly.

The van is described as being an older model, dark coloured with sliding doors on both sides.

Police are asking anyone with details on what happened to give them a call.
