Four-country investigation leads to abduction charges against Saskatoon father

SASKATOON – A Saskatchewan man has been charged with abducting his child after a police investigation spanning four countries.

Investigators allege the father travelled with a Brazilian woman and their two-year-old daughter from Brazil to Ukraine in July. Police say the man then took the little girl and went to the Philippines, where he left her before he returned to Canada.

“The original missing child report was actually taken in the Ukraine,” Kelsie Fraser, spokeswoman for Saskatoon police, said Tuesday.

“The Brazilian woman, who is the child’s mother, returned to Brazil. Authorities there in Brazil alerted authorities here in Canada and Saskatchewan Justice. That’s how the file came to us, because that was where the man was believed to be and was in fact.”

Fraser says Saskatoon police were alerted in August and started a long investigation.

“We began trying to locate the man, trying to find out the back story and so we liased regularly with the RCMP national missing children operation out of Ottawa,” said Fraser.

A 47-year-old man was arrested in Saskatoon on Friday. He made a brief court appearance Tuesday.

Fraser says the child was found over the weekend in the Philippines and is in the care of social services in that country.

“She was found to be in good health,” said Fraser.
