Police get flood of tips after Madeleine McCann TV special

UNITED KINGDOM (NEWS1130) – Hundreds of new tips are coming in to police about the young British girl who vanished in Portugal more than six years ago.

The BBC TV show Crimewatch, which is similar to America’s Most Wanted, aired a special on Madeleine McCann yesterday.

Investigators provided new details, including a timeline that McCann’s parents Gerry and Kate hope will provide a break in the case.

“That’s given us great hope that we can find Madeleine; that we can find what’s happened,” says Kate McCann.

Before the segment was over, police were flooded with calls.

Madeleine was three years old in 2007, when she disappeared from the resort where her parents were staying. Portuguese police wrapped up their investigation into the case a year after Madeleine’s disappearance, but British detectives re-opened the case in July.

“Primarily what we sought to do from the beginning is try to take everything back to zero, if you like,” says Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood. “Everything back to the beginning, and then re-analyze and re-assess everything; accepting nothing.”

Despite the new developments, police say they aren’t expecting a quick resolution to the case.
