Expect to see more bears before hibernation season!

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – After a quiet season, bear activity is ramping up, as the animals prepare for hibernation and search for food.

Meg Toom with Wildsafe BC says Thanksgiving garbage is going to get noticed.

“I know we’ve all had our filling of stuffing, cranberry sauce, and turkey over the weekend… Anything that’s super-smelly and yummy to bears, make sure you stick it in a ziplock bag and freeze it until it’s your garbage day,” she advises.

“It’s a really tough call when you’re driving at night, it’s pitch black out, and you’ve got a black animal crossing the highway. But it’s just really important to keep an eye on the speed limits and keep running your eyes across [the road],” she adds.

Toom adds bears are now moving farther to find food sources, often bringing them into contact with people.

A mother and her cub were hit and killed on the highway outside Squamish on Monday.
