Senate motions introduced to suspend Senators

OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – The new government leader in the Senate says motions have been introduced to suspend former Tory Senators Mike Duffy, Pamela Wallin and Patrick Brazeau over their inappropriate expense claims.

Senator Claude Carignan calls it severe, but appropriate.

The Senators, who have been sitting as independents, would be stripped of their pay, benefits and Senate resources.

Brazeau was originally suspended with pay last winter after he was charged with assault and sexual assault.

Carignan says the Senators didn’t respect the dignity of the Senate, and claims this isn’t a question of money but gross misconduct.

Carignan argues Canadians cannot accept that people would abuse their power and take advantage of taxpayers’ dollars.

Duffy, Wallin and Brazeau are three of four senators at the heart of the spending scandal.

The fourth, Liberal Mac Harb, has resigned from the Upper Chamber.

Opposition MP’s, though, are not backing off.

NDP ethics critic Charlie Angus gained the support of other opposition parties today for his bid to have a Commons committee determine if the Prime Minister deliberately misled the Commons, or was deceived by his own staff.

News of the motions came just before government whip John Duncan announced in the House of Commons that Conservative MPs and senators will begin voluntarily disclosing greater details of their expenses.
