We have more tech-savvy toddlers these days: survey

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – How young is too young to start using a smartphone?

A new survey has found that toddlers are becoming tech-savvy a lot earlier these days.

Findings from Common Sense Media show 38 per cent of kids under two have already used a tablet or a smartphone. Compare that to just 10 per cent two years ago.

The study suggests by age eight, nearly 75 per cent of children will have used a touch screen mobile device.

We asked people in Vancouver what they think about tots using tablets. One woman says it is all about moderation.

“I think it’s okay in small doses, but definitely other activities are important for child development, like physical activity, interacting with other kids, you know, having one-on-on playtime with their parents,” she explains.

Not all parents are against the idea. One father tells us using a tablet or a smartphone is a good way for children to prepare for future jobs and social interactions.

“It’s an important part of communication literacy for them,” he says. “They’re going to grow up in a world where that is how you interact with people, that’s how you interact with objects, that’s how you do your job.”

But for now, toddlers are using smartphones and tablets to play games and watch videos.
