Toronto’s daily newspapers call for Mayor Ford to step down

TORONTO (NEWS1130) – All of Toronto’s daily newspapers have published editorials calling for Mayor Rob Ford to step down, after the jaw-dropping revelation that police have retrieved a video that has been reported to show the mayor smoking what appears to be crack cocaine.

The Toronto Star, the National Post and the Toronto Sun are more direct in their editorials, while the Globe and Mail simply asks “how can he remain mayor if he will not even attempt to answer to any of this?”

The Sun — which has backed the mayor through much of his recent turmoil –  said it “will continue to support Ford’s fiscal agenda, even though we can no longer support the man. ”

In a 13-page editorial, the Star wrote: “If Ford possesses even a scintilla of respect and concern for the city he is supposed to lead, he will step down as mayor.”

The National Post‘s position is that “Ford must step down until the matter is fully resolved,” adding that “Toronto cannot be led by a man under active police scrutiny for his admitted connections to criminals, and his alleged connection to criminal activities.”
