Legions working to reach out to young people

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Tomorrow people around the world will take a moment to pause and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, but local legions are trying something different this year.

They are ramping up an effort to reach out to younger people, by being active online, using social media websites like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

Kathy Ensor with the Royal Canadian Legion in Vancouver says the key for them is to let the younger generation know — the face of a veteran is no longer an elderly person.

“Because we’ve got our returning Afghan vets, those from Somalia, all over, the face of the veteran has changed and we want to make sure people are aware of that.”

She adds they still have older veterans go to schools to speak to students, and this year soldiers home from Afghanistan offered to do the same. “We want to ensure that it gets passed on to younger folks. For all the sacrifices that our veterans have, and are making, that must never, ever be forgotten.”
