Ford’s admissions aren’t enough for criminal charge: expert

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has admitted to criminal activity a few times now, so why hasn’t he been charged with anything?

News1130 legal analyst Michael Shapray says while Ford’s confessions sound pretty bad, they’re not bad enough to warrant an arrest or charges.

“They don’t point to a specific time or place or incident in relation to each of the things that he’s admitted, and obviously when you charge him with a criminal offence you have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that something happened at a certain time and place.”

We do know police followed Ford for months and may have seen things that would have warranted stopping him; but they didn’t do that, either. Shapray, a defence lawyer, says that is shocking.

“It appears to me that this situation involves the mayor of Toronto basically getting a pass from the police and not being stopped in situations where they clearly had the grounds to stop him.”

As for what legal advice Shapray would give the mayor: Get help and stop talking.
