Snow coming for local mountains; rescue group issues warning

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – Ready or not, it’s coming this weekend!

There is snow in the forecast for the local mountains and a local rescue group wants you to understand that being properly equipped could save your life.

Tim Jones with North Shore Rescue says people need to adjust; that means wearing the proper clothing, having the proper equipment and, most importantly, knowing the trail. He notes people have to look at the routes as winter ones.

“Even though there will be snow, it’s not consolidated. People can slip and fall into rocks or tree gullys, so it can be quite hazardous as the start of the season for this kind of activity.”

He reminds us that some people they have to rescue are not prepared for the conditions.

“Phone the Canada West Mountain School or go to the various hiking clubs throughout Vancouver and get knowledge or find someone who has the knowledge to go out with to get the experience,” advises Jones.

North Shore Rescue is now winter operations mode.

“We are preparing for avalanche response. We are preparing for backcountry travel in a winter situation, so people have to adjust accordingly.”

He says going with a big group of people doesn’t mean you’re any safer on the hills.
