Hundreds attend Enbridge anti-pipeline rally

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Almost 1,000 people gathered in Vancouver on Saturday afternoon to rally against the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline.

People showed up carrying signs, some even had on costumes to help urge Premier Christy Clark not to approve the pipeline, which has the support of the federal government.

Colin was one of many people carrying a sign and says BC shouldn’t be piping oil out of our coast. “Oil is not the solution. We don’t need more of it and we don’t need to send it to China. Endangering our coastline for somebody else’s profit on an entirely different continent is not worth it.”

Does he think the premier will listen? “Absolutely not,” laughs Colin. “That’s not their job is it?”

Chris, originally from Kitimat and whose parents and grandparents still live there, says the process is very destructive. “It ruins our water, our fish and I just want everybody to know that we’re out here supporting a good cause and hopefully people learn and join in.”

Another man with a huge “stop oil” sign around his neck says it’s a broader set of issues. “What this demonstrates is the inner-connectedness of these issues. Fracking, Kinder Morgan, and Enbridge, obviously have a close connection but there are other issues that are connected as well.”

A broad cross section of interest groups were represented from First Nations to the City of Vancouver.
