Accused illegal dentist likely to be returned to BC: expert

By

TORONTO (NEWS1130) – The man accused of running an illegal dental practice out of his home in Burnaby is due in a Toronto courtroom today.

Tung Sheng (David) Wu, who vanished in May when the BC College of Dental Surgeons uncovered the operation, turned himself in to Toronto police over the weekend.

“I would anticipate that in light of the fact that he is facing a jail sentence for contempt of court in British Columbia, and that he turned himself in to police in Toronto, he will be returned to BC to serve his jail sentence and to appear before the court,” says News1130 Legal Analyst Michael Shapray.

Wu was handed a three-month jail sentence earlier for ignoring a 2003 court order to stop practising dentistry without a licence, even though he didn’t show up for the hearing.

Shapray doesn’t think any additional jail time will be tacked on to Wu’s sentence.

“I don’t anticipate there will any grounds to fight the sentence in light of the fact that the BC court has ordered him to go to jail for contempt of court,” he explains.

“I don’t know that there would be any additional penalties. The court gave a sentence of three months for contempt. The fact that he has not been in communication with the court hasn’t led to any new proceedings that I’m aware of.”

The BC College of Dental Surgeons warned hundreds of people to get to get tested for blood-borne illnesses such as hepatitis and HIV.
