Lying about distracted driving won’t help: Abbotsford Police

By

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – As we get closer to the holiday season, when we all have lots on our minds, police are warning you to keep your eyes on the road.

Abbotsford Police are out with another safety message aimed at distracted drivers.

Constable Ian MacDonald says if you do get into a crash while you’re on your phone, lying about it won’t get you very far. “There is a track record; there is a log that is kept of usage. Many of these devices are GPS-enabled and certainly, you’ll know from receiving your monthly bill, that every minute that you use your device is tracked.”

MacDonald tells us while impaired driving is frowned upon these days, people who use electronics while behind the wheel don’t have the same attitude.

“You will always find one or two in the group that sort of acknowledge that they’ve done it and they giggle. Although they admit that they shouldn’t do it, they are pretty quick to offer that they have and there isn’t that sort of social stigma that’s attached.”

He adds apart from continued enforcement, the only solution is to keep hammering home the message that distracted driving can be just as dangerous as driving while drunk.
