Support for Northern Gateway pipeline on the rise: poll

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Support for the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline project seems to be on the rise in BC.

A new poll finds the argument about bringing economic benefits has gained traction. Mario Canseco with Insights West tells us there has been a seven per cent increase in support (to 42%) since February.

“A lot of BC residents were looking at it and saying ‘This is going to create jobs, this is going to be good for the ecoomy, this is going to be good for First Nations, which is something that we didn’t see a few months ago. That being said, most of the animosity towards it from an environmental standpoint is still there.”

Canseco says even though opposition appears to be on the decline, people are still concerned about increases in oil tanker traffic, the risk of an oil spill and the impact of construction on the environment.

There has also been a substantial (14%) drop in people who say they’re opposed to the project, to 47 per cent today.
