VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s a busy weekend for the local sports teams.

NHL

The Canucks kicked off their four-game road trip on a winning note yesterday, topping the Ottawa Senators 5-2. Tomorrow morning, they will be in the Big Apple for a date with the Rangers.

It will be the first time New York Coach Alain Vigneault will face his former team. John Tortorella is also facing the Rangers for the first time since being fired by them last spring.

Tortorella says he was very happy with yesterday’s performance in the nation’s capitol.

“We moved our lines around a little bit. Different guys contributed. Even some guys who didn’t score contributed. We still have some work to do as far a situational play, but there is no complaints here. We’ve lost some games we should have won. I think we played well enough to win on Thursday, but we still have some things to work on.”

Brad Richards and Derek Stepan lead the offensive charge for the Rangers. They each have 17 points in 25 games this season.

Puck drop is at 11 a.m. and can be viewed on Sportsnet Pacific.

On Sunday, the Canucks have another early game. This time they are playing the Carolina Hurricanes. The Canes are ninth in the Eastern Conference with a 10-10-5 record. Carolina has struggled offensively this year and their leading scorer is Eric Staal, who has just 18 points.

Puck drop for that game is at 10 a.m. and can be viewed on Sportsnet Pacific.

The Vancouver Giants have not lost in regulation in seven games. They will try to continue that streak this weekend with back-to-back games against the Cougars in Prince George. Vancouver is eighth in the Western Conference and Prince George is three points behind in ninth place.

The G-men are lead by Carter Popoff who has 30 points 27 games. Defenceman Brett Kulak is playing at a point-a-game pace for the Giants with 27 points in 27 games.

Troy Bourke leads Prince George in scoring with 29 points, while newly acquired Todd Fiddler has 14 points in his first nine games with the Cougars.

The Giants are undefeated against Prince George so far this season. Dalton Sward will be playing his 200th Western Hockey League game tonight. All 200 games have been played in a Vancouver Giants uniform.

The puck drops for tonight and tomorrow’s games are 7 p.m.
