Beware of cheap deals this holiday season

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The cheapest deals may be the most dangerous ones this time of year.

It’s that time of year where counterfeit products increase in circulation, according to Abbotsford Police Cst. Ian MacDonald. “Knock-off items are not only impactful to the companies, but they can be impactful to the consumer.”

He says a perfect example is fake electronics catching fire. “Our advice is to always buy from a reputable dealer. Clearly, if you’re getting a deal that is too good to be true, you yourself know that and despite the fact you’re willing to entertain the risk, consumers on the whole will pay the price for that.”

MacDonald says people should look for spelling mistakes on the packaging or instructions, which normally indicates the product is a fake.
