It’s Giving Tuesday!

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – After the spending frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, today you’re being invited to focus a little less on consumerism and a little more on giving back to charities and causes that are important to you.

Giving Tuesday started last year in the US and saw a 53 per cent increase in online giving the day after Cyber Monday.

“The idea was very simple: After days for shopping, there should be a day for giving. It was hugely successful in its first year in the United States with over 2,500 charities and volunteer organizations, corporations and foundations that all came together from all across the country,” says Woodrow Rosenbaum, executive director of GIV3, one of the founding partners of Giving Tuesday.

GIV3, along with CanadaHelps.org and 13 other founding partners, brought Giving Tuesday to Canada for 2013; Rosenbaum feels it will be a huge success with well over 1,000 organizations signed up.

“The type of activities on Giving Tuesday are really as varied as the organizations that have joined. Some of the national programs of interest include CIBC donating one dollar to every retweet that their Giving Tuesday tweet gets today. Interac Foundation is matching donations given on the Giving Tuesday site or the CanadaHelps website using Interac as a payment method. Easter Seals Canada and a number of other organizations are running text-to-donate campaigns which are provided by the Mobile Giving Foundation,” Rosenbaum tells News1130.

If you would rather give your time than a cash donation, Volunteer Canada is matching people with opportunities.

“Volunteer Canada also lists all the volunteer centres in every community in the country so it’s really easy to find an opportunity that suits your interest in your area,” notes Rosenbaum.

You are also being encouraged to share your stories of giving on Facebook and Twitter.
