Canadians avoided Black Friday mall mayhem: report

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There were a lot of bargains out there, but few Canadians took advantage of Black Friday sales this year.

A lot of us just don’t want to bother with the big crowds and chaos at the malls.

“Three quarters of Canadian shoppers actually avoided Black Friday sales this year,” explains David Ian Gray with DIG360 Consulting.

He notes many people chose to shop online and pick up in-store instead. “Not all the consumer public really enjoys those crazy door-crasher moments; many people try to avoid them. But the option of buying online and picking up in stores seems to be resonating.”

Gray tells us people especially seem to want to avoid Black Friday shopping in the States.

“Of the people who dropped Black Friday [in Canada], roughly eight per cent of them cross-border shopped at US stores and approximately 13 per cent shopped online for Black Friday sales.”

He says this year’s numbers are similar to the last time they looked at the shopping habits of Canadians in 2011.
