Say goodbye to permanent postage: expert

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Permanent postage is likely a thing of the past thanks to the cost of stamps going up.

Brian Grant Duff with All Nations Stamp and Coin says right after Canada Post sent out its news release about cutbacks and price increases, it pulled the P stamp to avoid a mass run on them. “Since most basic rate stamps are now P for permanent postage, that’s going to make a stamp shortage not only now but into the first couple months of next year.”

Duff says the timing of all of this is counterproductive. “Why would make this announcement after Parliament had closed, and two weeks before Christmas, the height of the Christmas mailing time.”

Duff adds Canada Post’s decision to reduce service will impact stamp collectors negatively, despite the cost of garden-variety stamps going up. “It’s much like discontinuing the penny and the world of coins.”

He says he thought Canada Post would try reducing the number of days per week it delivered door-to-door, but didn’t think he’d see the system end completely.
