Vancouver to host free 2014-2015 New Year’s Eve celebration

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The City of Vancouver has announced a family-friendly countdown party to ring in 2015 that will include fireworks.

This will be the first time in more than a decade that Vancouver will host a free public New Year’s Eve event.

The celebration will include a festival along Burrard Landing that will include things like food carts, exhibits, entertainment, and children’s activities. The Olympic Cauldron at Jack Poole Plaza will also be lit.

There will be an ‘Early Eve’ Countdown celebration for families with young children. At midnight, the countdown will feature a fireworks display launched from a barge in Coal Harbour.

It does raise the question though of how organizers can ensure it will be family-friendly.

“We’re going to be providing the best possible and safest event. It’s no different than what we see with the Celebration of Lights and the Canada Day celebrations. It’s really important that we do this right and follow the procedures that are in place at the city,” explains Charles Gauthier with the Downtown Vancouver Business Association.

He says they’ve come a long way since the riot of 2011.

“I think there were a lot of lessons learned and the biggest one was that we need to do a better job of planning for all types of events.”
