Small businesses worry how they’ll cope with Hydro hikes

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The provincial NDP is raising the plight of small business as the province rolls out a series of BC Hydro rate hikes.

The extra costs are leaving some owners worried about the bottom line.

Garth Owen owns the Organic Grocer in Surrey; he’s crunching the numbers to figure out how much more he’s going to have to pay, and he’s not happy.

“Basically, we’re going to lose money. We spent years converting to LED and low-voltage, and doing as much energy conservation as we can. But all of that has gone down the drain with these increases,” he tells us.

The NDP is blaming Liberal mismanagement of BC Hydro for upcoming hikes, including nine per cent next year and six per cent the year after.
