New Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass featured at CES

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA (NEWS1130) – For a number of people, there is a concern around the transmission of germs and bacteria that lives in our smartphones, and how it can be exchanged when phones are shared. A new product featured at CES in Las Vegas can help reduce the spread of germs.

It’s called Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass, and it is incorporated into the glass surface of your smartphone.

Joydeep Lahiri, the Division Vice President at Corning International, says this new cover glass is the first of its kind in the world. “It’s got ionic silver embed into the glass that maintains antimicrobial activity through the lifetime of the device. What we’ve done here, is we’ve put just the right amount silver so that none of the optical, mechanical and electrical properties of gorilla are compromised.”

Lahiri says on average, we spend about an hour a day on our smartphones and without a proper way to clean them, this new antimicrobial glass will reduce the level of bacteria on our touchscreens.

Antibacterial wipes, foams, sprays, and films do exist, but they are temporary, and many manufacturers advise against them.

The Steelcase by RoomWizard will feature the glass and will be released sometime later this year.
