Group protests Richmond order to have rottweilers destroyed

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – Animal rights protesters are set to gather in front of Richmond City Hall today, to demonstrate against an order to have a pair of rottweilers destroyed.

It all stems from a minor dog bite that happened last fall; Dustin Wang was bitten on the leg by the larger of two rottweilers that had escaped from their yard to a nearby construction site. Wang says the resulting injury barely left a mark. But the dogs, named Axle and Paris, have been ordered destroyed.

Protest organizer Carolyn Quirt says punishing the animals isn’t the answer. “This new bylaw manager is working backwards compared to what has been done over the years. [We’ve] made great strides towards rehabilitating dogs, not destroying, but he’s going backwards.”

“What I think should happen is that perhaps the owners of these dogs need a bit of training; [they] need to make sure those animals get out and exercise more often so they don’t want to run out,” she adds.

The owners of the dogs have hired a lawyer, while the animals remain in the care of the Richmond Animal Protection Society.
