Another Burnaby neighbourhood undergoing redevelopment

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – The City of Burnaby is looking at a major makeover of the area that includes the Lougheed Town Centre, and a big picture plan is about to be brought to you, the public, for feedback.

City Councillor Dan Johnston says the work would be on scale with what’s being done at Brentwood Town Centre, although the idea is not quite the same.

While Brentwood is bringing in a number of towers, he says Lougheed will be much more to the ground.

“We’re going to get a lot less pavement, and a few more community services.  Hopefully a new swimming pool, library, updated community police station, some streetscape, [and] maybe a town square.”

Johnston adds the goal for the Lougheed area is to humanize the neighbourhood.  “Just a better place, [being] part of the community as opposed to a massive shopping mall with blacktop and ugly buildings.”

Council endorsed the vision this week ahead of the beginning of consultations.

Earlier this month we told you how at least six stores at the mall were being either closed or re-located to make room for a Steve Nash Fitness World.  Some struggling retailers told News1130, they are welcoming the news, in hopes it would boost their bottomline.
