Many of us support a national suicide prevention fund: poll

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Most Canadians believe the federal government should be doing more to help young people deal with mental health issues and prevent suicides.

A new Ipsos Reid poll done for Partners for Mental Health finds more than 80 per cent of Canadians support using tax dollars to create a national suicide prevention fund.

There have been a number of high-profile suicides in recent years, including that of Port Coquitlam teen Amanda Todd. The poll finds more than half of Canadians don’t think there are enough services to help young Canadians.

It also suggests more than 90 per cent believe youth mental health issues should have the same level of support as other illnesses.

Many parents are also worried about their kids’ mental health; about about two-thirds with kids under the age of 25 reported this in the poll.
