Awards being given to businesses that are "bike friendly"

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s a first for bike-friendly businesses in Metro Vancouver; a cycling group is hosting its inaugural “Bike Friendly Business” Awards this Wednesday.

Colin Stein with HUB: Your Cycling Connection says businesses that have gone the extra mile to provide cycling amenities and infrastructure which support employees biking to work have been nominated.

He tells us the Vancouver Airport Authority is nominated for an award, which may come as a surprise for some people.

“What they’ve done is go that extra mile in developing secure lock-ups and storage for bikes [and] shower facilities… they’ve really spent a lot of time working with us in conducting assessments and going through workshops.”

The Vancouver Public Library is another award nominee.

“They’ve got a name there called ‘Pedal Pushers.’ It’s a group of people within the union there that have, over the years, engaged each other to become more and more active in cycling to work. What management did is work with them to understand what their needs were,” explains Stein.

More than 50 companies from across Metro Vancouver will take part in the awards ceremony.
