VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Illegal garbage dumping by people living in Vancouver’s West End isn’t going unnoticed by the people who live in the neighbourhood.
A News1130 listener emailed us a photo of a line of litter and dumped furniture behind a building on Jervis Street near Pacific.
Randy Helten with West End Neighbours acknowledges it is a problem. “I would say it’s almost every month. Around the West End, in every back alley, you can find mattresses, cabinets, sofas, and so on.”
He believes it’s a communication issue.
“It’s kind of an awareness issue, especially with rental buildings, where there’s a fair amount of turnover. If the owners were able to inform the renters of the options for dealing with furniture when they’re moving out, it would make a big difference.”
Helten says more onus should be placed on building owners to supervise renters.
