Council for Canadians release “alternate” federal budget

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The federal budget comes town Tuesday, but The Council for Canadians has released their annual “alternative” budget already. They’re urging Ottawa to spend, not cut.

Executive Director Garry Neil says the bare bones budget promised by Ottawa’s finance minister won’t boost the economy. He’s urging government to shell out more money to create jobs, and roll backs on corporate tax cuts.

“That’s the positive vision that we would have for how you can get Canada out of this deep economic hole that we’re in. We don’t have a spending problem in Canada, we have a revenue problem,” says Neil.

Neil claims part of the reason our country’s productivity is down and employment numbers aren’t rising as quickly as they should is thanks to those corporate tax cuts. “What’s happened with Canadian corporations is that they’re sitting on billions of dollars of revenue and earnings which they are refusing to reinvest.”

In this year’s alternative budget, they’re calling for a public system to pay for drugs across the country and other spending initiatives designed to create jobs.

The Council for Canadians is a volunteer organization that has 60 chapters across the country, dedicated to government and corporations accountability.
