Surrey crews caught offguard by icy morning

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Drivers in Surrey were some of the most frustrated by slippery conditions this morning with many iced over roads and multiple accidents on major routes like Highway 10.

It came as a surprise for many cities, most of whom had been ramping up for a Family Day long weekend snowstorm that never arrived.

Since the “snow” showed up mainly as rain, City of Surrey Operations Manager Ray Kerr says a few de-icing trucks were patrolling early this morning. They didn’t realize until around 5 a.m. they were in over their heads; that’s when additional crews were called out.

“They got to the areas they were trying to address as quick as they could. Unfortunately with everything else, they’re also stuck in the same traffic jams that the rush hour is,” says Kerr.

He notes about 35 trucks were on the roads in Surrey by rush hour, trying to get a handle on the ice.
