WHISTLER (NEWS1130) – Whistler-Blackcomb and Whistler RCMP are working together to investigate an illegal BASE jump that popped up on YouTube.
The video shows a man and a woman in the peak to peak gondola, shouting and high-fiving before the man makes his way to the outside. He counts down from three and then leaps off the side.
Michelle Leroux with Whistler-Blackcomb says it the doors of the gondola can’t be opened easily. “There’s actually three locking mechanisms and it was opened with brute force. It’s not something you can do with your bare hands.”
She says the jumper is lucky to be alive. “The gondola is, at the highest point over the valley floor is 436 metres. Obviously if something malfunctioned with the parachute or he didn’t jump properly, it would have been certain death.”
Leroux says RCMP are working to identify the pair.
Damage to the gondola has since been repaired.
