MLA Mike Farnworth will run for BC NDP leadership

PORT COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) – BC NDP MLA Mike Farnworth is putting months of speculation to rest by announcing he will run for leader of the party. He is the first official candidate to enter the leadership race and will be rolling out his campaign formally in the next few weeks.

Farnworth, who is also the Provincial Finance Critic, says he’s received significant encouragement from party members and British Columbians to run for leader.

He vows to focus on issues that matter to you, including creating jobs and a diverse economy–something he hopes will broaden the party’s support across the province.

“I think one of the key things we have to do over the next three years is position the NDP so that we are able to put forward a positive and inclusive economic message that builds on the strength of the regions of this province, the resources of this province and the talents of its people.” He adds it’s important to invest in people by increasing education opportunities, expanding the province’s tech sector and looking at provincial resources beyond just liquefied natural gas.

Farnworth also took a jab at former leader Adrian Dix’s lackluster performance in May’s election: “Not only do we want to have a positive vision, but we wanna make sure that we take the government on on it’s record. After 16 years, this government will have a record and will be held accountable. I don’t intend to fight an election with one hand tied behind my back.”

The party will vote in a new leader in September.
