Truckers reach deal with Port Metro Vancouver

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A strike by unionized truckers working at Canada’s busiest port has been averted, though non-union truckers who withdrew services at Port Metro Vancouver last month will remain off the job.

Representatives for both union and non-union truckers say a tentative agreement was reached with the help of veteran mediator Vince Ready, and the terms will be presented to members on Saturday.

Roughly 400 members of Unifor-Vancouver Container Truckers’ Association threatened to strike today unless their demands of better pay and standardized rates were addressed.

Since a tentative agreement has been reached with the help of Ready, BC Area Director for Unifor Gavin McGarrigle says unionized truckers will not be raising picket lines as a sign of good faith.

The non-union truckers say they’ll continue job action until at least Saturday when the truckers have had a chance to review the proposal.

United Truckers Association spokesman Manny Dosange says members have been struggling financially and they need assurance that their concerns will be resolved before they call off the job action.
