Police cracking down on jaywalking in Surrey

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Following the death of a 14-year-old girl in Surrey back in September, police will now be cracking down on jaywalking.

Spring means more people out, walking on the streets. ICBC and police want you to pay extra attention to what’s happening around you.

Karen Klein with ICBC says police will not only be handing out more tickets, but warnings too. “Warning cards will look like violation tickets but will be used more as a tool to talk with people who are actually crossing a block or doing things wrong so they can help educate. In a way, it might be your lucky day, you won’t get a ticket.”

Those cards will be available in Punjabi too.

Last year, 47 per cent of traffic fatalities in Surrey involved a pedestrian or cyclist, the majority of them were jaywalkers.
