Be careful on the roads as we adjust to Daylight Saving Time

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Feeling a little jetlagged this morning? It’s not surprising if you do; Daylight Saving Time is probably the culprit.

Be extra careful while driving today.

Ryerson sleep expert Colleen Carney says research out of UBC has found for three days after the time change, the number of accidents on the road and at work increases by up to seven per cent.

“It is exactly like jet lag,” she tells us. “This is a mismatch between what time your body thinks it is and what time the clock now reads.”

“There are some issues with traffic accidents and even pedestrian accidents, so this is something that we do need to be worried about, but it’s about the sleep deprivation itself,” says Carney.

So, don’t be surprised if you had a harder time getting out of bed today.
