VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver’s mayor says with an aging baby boomer population, finding affordable housing for seniors has to be a priority for council.
Shelters are seeing an uptick in seniors looking for help, and Gregor Robertson admits there’s a problem.
“UBC identified the concern,” he tells us. [In the] last year or two, there’s been real pressure, particularly, for Asian seniors and not having culturally appropriate facilities. So, there is a crunch there.”
“As the boomers age, we’re going to see even more pressure on a need for seniors’ housing. So, it is a priority for council, for sure,” he adds.
Robertson says there are also a lot of former foster kids ending up in shelters.
The results of yesterday’s homeless count won’t be known until the end of April.
