NDP’s Bruce Ralston named Opposition house leader

VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – BC New Democrat Bruce Ralston has been named the Opposition house leader while John Horgan runs for the party leadership.

Ralston, the member for Surrey-Whalley, will take over house duties immediately from Horgan, who announced on Monday that he’s running to replace Leader Adrian Dix.

Horgan, the NDP’s energy critic, said he decided to enter the leadership race after other New Democrats persuaded him to run.

He has announced his campaign will be co-chaired by David Eby, the MLA for Vancouver-Point Grey, and Michelle Mungall, the MLA for Nelson-Creston. “I am delighted that Michelle and David will be leading Team Horgan,” he said in an emailed statement. “They are extraordinary colleagues and together we will inspire New Democrats with ideas to make life better for all British Columbians.

Horgan and NDP Finance Critic Mike Farnworth are the only contenders so far in the leadership bid.

Dix announced his resignation last fall, following the New Democrat’s unexpected loss to the Liberals in the May 2013 provincial election.

The leadership vote is slated for September in Vancouver.
